There’s a balance you need to strike to achieve effective communication. Too little information, the message is missed and the call-to-action vague. Too much information and you become a nuisance and are mentally marked a spammer. This is true of both internal and external communications.
‘Spam’ brings to mind unwanted, unsolicited, unscrupulous, vulgar and sometimes malicious emails that invade our mailboxes. However if you have ever changed your subscription settings or unsubscribed completely from the correspondences of a service provider you once willingly chose to communicate with, you know that it is possible to recategorize a once useful connection as a spammer.
The big issue usually is that as a business or employer, when you put information out there and there is no conversion, you immediately assume it’s because people are unaware of what you previously said. So you say it again. With more emphasis. In caps. And exclamation marks. And with increasing frequency. Sometimes with a thinly veiled threat. And… people unsubscribe....
